Save the Date!
History Enrichment Day
Year 2
🤎 Friday 22nd May 2026 🤎
Or should I say May 1905?!
😉
We are going to travel back in time, to 121 years ago!
The year is 1️⃣9️⃣0️⃣5️⃣.
The year that St Mary's Primary School was founded.
Strict rules!
Desks in rows!
Zero electricity...well, we'll see! 😂
🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
Could you dress in the style of a schoolchild of the early 1900s?
Could you bring in a very simple packed lunch wrapped in baking parchment for example...?
Or stored in a tin or a basket...?
Plastic-free, simple fayre would be most desirable...of course you could sneak in modern foodstuffs if you wrap them in baking paper. 😉
Lunches would typically have been prepared at home and would have been quite uncomplicated - sandwiches with fillings of meat or cheese, a treat of a hard-boiled egg perhaps.
(If your child wishes to have a school dinner in the school hall as usual, this will be provided of course if necessary. No problem at all.)
However, for the most immersive experience, we are going to aim to keep our lunches as basic as is tolerable for one day only, bread, cheese, jam perhaps, a simple cake, a scone or pieces of fruit. Children were often sent to school with cold tea!🙂 I think we'd better stick to clean fresh water on this occasion.
Weather permitting, we will hope to picnic on the field together with our classmates...🤞.
Please do not go to any expense, it should be a joyful role-play experience. Just open your wardrobe and see if you can cobble something together. If possible, the children should not wear watches or jewellery.
Boys might wear a long-sleeved shirt, shorts and long socks, perhaps a laced boot.
Girls could wear layers of blouses and dresses to act a pinafores, simple colours. You could plait your hair, wear it in ringlets, tie ribbons in your hair...
We have been learning about how formal and serious school life was in the 1900s in class.
See if your child can remember any of the details so far.
Thank you!
We are looking forward to it!
